Noicest candles ever!

On the weekend I was minding my own beeswax at Balmain Markets when I came across Greg and his Cup Candles—soy candles with the bestest smells ever.

You know how candles sometimes don’t smell too much like the scent they’re supposed to be emulating, or the smell doesn’t actually make its way across the room?

The Cup Candles don’t have that problem—these are without doubt the best-smelling candles I’ve ever sniffed. I have the passionfruit candle sitting on my coffee table as I type—unlit—and the smell is gently wafting around the room—not too much, but there. When the candles are lit it enhances the experience, but doesn’t make it overpowering. I can’t stop inhaling this smell!

All of the candles from Cup Candles are soy-based and burn for 30-40 hours, depending on the cup style.

We bought the passionfruit, cinnamon and vanilla scented candles. The passionfruit is hands-down my all-time favourite (unless mango or peppermint scents exist and then I’ll have to undergo therapy) and I was close to buying the chocolate flavour but decided the flavour was too realistic and feared that I’d end up eating the candle.

I had a little chat with Greg while I was frantically inhaling all the different scents (there’s pineapple, lavender, mandarin and heaps heaps more) and he was telling me that he travels to Japan every year to source cool-looking Japanese cups to create one-off sets of candles.

The clear-glass candles sell on the web site for $15, but if you find Greg or Miki at a market you can buy them for $10 each. Bargain!

You can buy candles online and they can even ship overseas.

The Crabapple Bakery Cupcake Cookbook

crabapplecoverI cannot begin to tell you how much I love this cupcake cookbook—The Crabapple Bakery Cupcake Cookbook—it is by far the best cupcake recipe book I have in my collection. And I have A LOT of cupcake books on my recipe shelf (I really should take a photo of my cupcake bookshelf and my cupcake supplies storage box—there’s a lot!)

The story behind the Crabapple Bakery sounds normal enough – Melbournite Jennifer Graham starts selling cupcakes at the local markets and ends up doing so well she set up a cupcake bakery. Googling the bakery it becomes obvious that things turned pear-shaped and there seemed to be complaints of stale cupcakes and even cockies in the display window! The company has re-established itself as Crabapple Cupcakes and Supplies and is back at the Prahran Markets.

From the moment my sister gave me this book in September last year, I have been in love with it. There are so many helpful things that have become treasured cupcake-making tips (like, New Zealand butter has a higher fat content and therefore is nicer to bake with) and even a list of suppliers for decorations and equipment to make the all-important perfect cupcake.

The only thing with the recipes is that they say they make 24 cupcakes—and the cupcakes must be the size of Tassie because I can’t fit the full mixture in my Kenwood Chef bowl! The first time I made cupcakes from the Crabapple book I made 48 of my regular-sized cupcakes (more like the old-school pattycake size, slightly smaller than the traditional cupcake/muffin size that’s popular today). So all of the recipes have been halved so that I make a manageable number of cupcakes. Although, the full recipes will be handy when I’m making the next big batch for a friend’s 30th birthday.

I knew I was onto a  good thing with this book when my friend Nicky from Yummie Tummie Catering told me that she uses this book exclusively for the cupcakes she makes for catering orders. You know it’s good when someone who cooks for a living uses these recipes :)

Anyone for Jelly Wrestling?

gellibaffkidspool

Gelli Baff is so cool! Why didn’t they have this stuff when I was a kid? I would love to have a go of this, wouldn’t be wasting it on the damn kids.

Run yourself a bath, sprinkle the stuff in and *poof* it’s magic! You are bathing in jelly. You could even have a blow up pool full of jelly…for the kids of course. Not really into wrestling myself..but hey, what ever floats your boat.

It comes in a rang of funky colours. It won’t stain your skin, bath or towels and when your done turns back into water.

Smash your alarm clock and dinner plates

“Today things often don’t have an age anymore. They are replaced before they can change their form and surface.”

Matthias Lange has designed and exhibited his prototypes of homewares that are designed to improve as they deteriorate.

There are the CYMK plates that have a white exterior but are coloured inside so that when the plates are chipped the colour is on display:

And what I really really love is the smash version of the alarm clock. You whack it on the top to turn it off and the clock is designed to dent over time. How insanely satisfying for the destructive side in all of us!

I’m also thinking there is a market for a couch with pillows for armrests and coffee tables that are designed for the purposes of displaying pretty books and acting as dinnertable when we watch tv!

What else is there a desperate need for?

Kudos to the ever-lovely Miss Manda for being the source of today’s awesome!
